Supporting Local Rochester Artists :: January 3rd, 2011
One of the things I miss about art school and my youth is being surrounded by other artists and creatives. As I get deeper and deeper in the Photographic community in Rochester, as well as the wedding and portrait industry, I miss just simply being with art. Art for art’s sake and not just the business and marketing of art. I decided recently to start to pull back from the professional Photographers in Rochester and spend more time getting to know the local artists we have to offer. A way to hopefully reconnect with my roots.
A friend of mine started the 1975 Gallery in 2008 and he has done an amazing job pulling the local art scene together and bringing the more underground artists to the spotlight. His gallery openings are extremely well attended and really feel like the ‘it’ place to be during Rochester’s First Fridays. I try to hit up the First Friday events around town and always look forward to one of 1975′s offerings. Several of my close RIT friends have had their work in these shows, and I’ve been introduced to other artists such as Sarah Rutherford.
I’ve been checking out Sarah’s work for some time now and always knew when the piece and timing was right, I would buy something for myself. That opportunity came for me during her recent showing at the Owl House Restaurant with Lea Rizzo. It took a few months, but I finally connected with Sarah to buy my first piece… a Christmas present to myself. I love it and it fits perfectly in my dining room, just where I wanted it to hang.
